Description
The University of Mary Hardin Baylor’s College of Humanities and Sciences seeks qualified faculty for its English Department beginning Fall 2020, for the Mayborn Chair of Arts and Sciences. UMHB seeks faculty who are active Christians and dedicated teacher-scholars to prepare students for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society.

The Mayborn Chair is one of the top endowed professorships on the UMHB faculty and receives a salary supplement to foster promising research, teaching, or service activities related to the field of English. It also provides for a reduced teaching load to give time for advancing the mission of UMHB and contributing to the dissemination of research beyond the campus. The individual filling this endowed chair will be recognized for research, education, and service in the field of English. This position requires demonstrated impact and experience appropriate for initial appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with experience.

The English Department offers two undergraduate degree programs: a BA in English, and a BA in English with Teaching Certification in English Language Arts and Reading Secondary Level 7-12.

UMHB is conveniently located in Belton, an historic town of 20,000 in the heart of central Texas. Nearby cities are Temple (5 miles), Waco (45 miles), Austin (65 miles), San Antonio (130 miles) and Dallas/Ft. Worth (130 miles). Excellent schools, abundant cultural and recreational opportunities, and a high quality of life are hallmarks of the local community.

Faculty Responsibilities:   Activities required of all faculty include exemplary teaching, curriculum development, student advising; professional attainment; and service to department, college, university, and the community.

Specific Responsibilities:  Teach undergraduate courses in English. The teaching load for the Mayborn Chair is 6 hours per semester. The successful candidate will teach a variety of levels of English classes including sophomore-level literature. Upper-level classes will include Literary Periods and Major Authors. Frequent scholarly presentations and publications are required to maintain the status of the Mayborn Chair.
 
Qualifications: 
Doctorate in English is required. Candidate must show evidence of being able to teach literature at the junior (3000) and senior (4000) level. Special consideration will be given to candidates with additional backgrounds in Romantic, Victorian, and/or British Modernist literature. At least ten (10) years of progressive achievement in scholarly publication and presentations evidencing an affirmed reputation of eminence among colleagues in the field. Excellent teaching and communication skills, a dedication to professional attainment, and commitment to quality improvement are essential. Must be an active, and committed Christian.
