Description
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks qualified faculty for its Art Department beginning late July of 2024, with initial appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. This is a full-time, tenure-track teaching position. UMHB seeks faculty who are active Christians and dedicated teacher-scholars to prepare students for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society.

UMHB is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and offers B.F.A. and B.A. undergraduate degrees that include majors in Art Education, Graphic Design, and Studio Art. The department consists of eight full-time faculty, an art secretary, and eight part-time instructors who serve approximately 100 undergraduate majors.

UMHB is conveniently located in Belton, an historic town of 22,000 in the heart of central Texas. Nearby cities are Temple (7 miles), Waco (42 miles), Austin (60 miles), San Antonio (130 miles) and Dallas/Ft. Worth (130 miles). Excellent schools, abundant cultural and recreational opportunities, and a high quality of life are hallmarks of the local community.

Faculty Responsibilities:  
Activities required of all faculty include exemplary teaching, curriculum development, student recruitment and advising, professional attainment, and service to department, college, university, and the community.

Specific Responsibilities:  
The successful candidate will teach a course load of 12 credit hours per long semester with primary responsibilities encompassing studio art courses within 2D media focusing in the foundation’s curriculum: drawing, 2D and 3D design, and color theory. Secondary responsibilities will be dependent on departmental needs and could include art history survey courses and art education. The successful candidate should be well-versed in both traditional and contemporary trends in art, professional practices, and eager to work in a highly collaborative teaching environment targeting undergraduate art students. Enthusiasm for recruiting, undergraduate competitions, field trips, portfolio reviews, and assisting new graduates with job-seeking is essential. Other responsibilities of the position include university and departmental service, advising, and maintaining a scholarly or creative portfolio.
 
Qualifications: 
  • M.F.A in an area of visual studio art is required.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in art history and contemporary trends in art is required.
  • University-level teaching experience beyond graduate teaching is required.
  • A strong record of professional or academic accomplishment within the candidate’s specialty is required.
  • Excellent teaching and communication skills, a dedication to professional attainment, and commitment to quality improvement are essential.
  • Must be an active, committed Christian.
